What is GABBA?

GABBA is the Graduate Program in Areas of Basic and Applied Biology, which started in the academic year of 1996/1997 from the merger of 4 M.Sc. programs in the University of Porto: Genetics from the Faculty of Sciences, Cell Biology and Oncobiology from the Faculty of Medicine and Immunology from the Abel Salazar Biomedical Sciences Institute.

In addition to the connection with the aforementioned Faculties, GABBA has a prolific association with the IBMC/INEB (Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology/Biomedical Engineering Institute) and the IPATIMUP (Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of University of Porto), which provide laboratory space, lecture halls, as well as the lecturers and researchers that are responsible for the coursework of the graduate program.

The coordination of the Program has been established on a rotating basis between the Faculties/Institutes involved. However, with the integration into the Bologna Process, the primary administrative school will be the Abel Salazar Biomedical Sciences Institute.

Each academic year, nine students with degrees in areas relevant for the program are selected. The admitted candidates receive a 4-year Ph.D. fellowship funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), which also funds the program running costs.
